It is impossible to find any truly positive words to say about the tragic circumstances that lead to the death of our employee, Arcelie Laoagan, about eight weeks ago. That something like this could occur in our beautiful city is still a shock to many of us and we are hopeful that none of us will just accept this as something that happens in a “big” city. Simply put, this death should never have occurred and we were all shaken by it.
There is however, some good that can come out of any bad situation and that is why we are writing this thank-you letter to you today. First of all, we want to commend Mayor Bronconnier, Alderman Druh Farrell and Alderman Ray Jones. These three elected individuals have been tenacious in their efforts to see Calgary’s Public Transit security improved and as we have recently read, there will now be constant police patrols and significant clean up work done on the North East sections of the L.R.T. starting immediately. We cannot say that Arcelie’s horrific death has resulted in these actions, but we can at least say that important steps are being taken to ensure this does not happen again. These three civic leaders deserve our thanks and praise for their efforts.
There has also been an overwhelming public response from our decision to establish a fund for Arcelie’s five children in the Philippines. As of today, because of the incredible generosity of people like you, other Calgarians, people from across the Province and individuals from as far away as Victoria, Toronto and Australia, this fund stands at just over $111,000.00.
In addition to expressing the thanks and gratitude of every employee of West Canadian, we wanted you to also know that we have undertaken to ensure that every dollar raised will be used directly for the benefit of Arcelie`s family. We are working with the Filipino Catholic Society and we are confident that these funds will ultimately provide a good upbringing and hopefully a good education for all five of her children.
This is where the incredible response of Albertans and Canadians was so overwhelming and the simple purpose of our letter today is to thank you for your contribution and to ensure that we will keep a watchful eye on this money to make certain it is well used.
Thank you very much,
(Signed)

“On behalf of all of us at WC, thank you so much for your support and collecting donations for Arcelie. Arcelie was a part of our family as she was yours, so I know how much this has affected your entire congregation. While we are still saddened by the tragic events that led to Arcelie`s death, we are so encouraged by the outpouring of support from across Canada.”
