I Am Legend & God’s Message: A Movie Review

 by JOEY CRUZ

Just wanted to share some thoughts I have about this movie.  I’ll try my best not to give away most of the story.

Will Smith plays a doctor/scientist named Robert who was assigned to find a cure to this virus that killed most of humanity and turned a great many of the ones left as creatures who eat/kill – like zombies.  He is the only man left in New York City.  And he’s been ‘alone’ for 3 years with his pet dog and is continually testing and hoping to discover a cure.

At one part of the story, Robert explained why he persists on pursuing his mission and not leaving his post.  He cited a story in the life of his favorite singer – Bob Marley, who believes that he can ‘cure’ racism through music.  One day he was gunned down, but he survived.  Two days later, he got up on stage and sang again.  When asked why he did that, he said “The people who are trying to make this world worse are not taking a day-off.  How can I? Light up the darkness.”

In another part of the story, Robert let out his anger about how mankind has been destroyed by this virus, and would not hear of any news about an uninfected colony of humans camped in the mountains.  He just would not believe it and he ended by saying that there is no God.  At the conclusion of the movie, he had this realization of what he was meant to do which caused him to say later on “…I’m listening.”

Are you in some kind of trial or challenge in life that never seems to end?  The same relationship issues over and over?  Waiting to be reunited to a loved-one?  Have you been praying for someone to be saved for a long time but seemingly no result still?   You’re not alone.  I have that, too.  It’s either we doubt God’s abilities in helping us, or we depend on Him more and accept His will.  “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance” (James 1:2-3)
