The Value of Your Soul by Pastor Denzel Fenn

During Franklin Graham’s last visit to our city, he repeatedly declared that “you are a soul and a spirit that lives in a body.”  He stated, “your soul is the real you, your body will die but your soul will live on forever in either heaven or hell.”  I believe his message. All of this is substantiated by the Bible.  In the Book of Genesis we read, “and the LORD GOD formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul” (2:7) Man is a tri-part being.  Paul prayed, “May your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

Most of the emphasis in our world is placed upon the body.  We value it, care for it and cater to it.  Often in the process we neglect the most important part – our souls.

Jesus asked the questions – “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:36-37).  So if I treat my body to every pleasure; if it lives in the finest house and rides in an expensive automobile, but I fail to take care of my soul, I have in fact made a poor choice.  In reality I have made a fatal choice.

Jesus indicated that nothing a man could have, experience or achieve could equal the value of his soul.  No treasure would be worth it, if in the process of receiving it, you lost your soul.

The soul is of infinite value.  Yours is.  Value is always determined by what someone else is willing to pay.  My house is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.  The value of the soul was determined when God was willing to give His only Son and Christ was willing to give His life to pay the ransom for our souls.

Psalm 49: 7-8 – “None of them can by any means redeem (to pay the price) his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him – for the redemption of their souls is costly.”  Peter expressed it this way, “you were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold…but with the precious blood of Jesus” (I Peter 1:18-19).  Heaven’s most precious commodity was given to redeem our souls.

Jesus told the story of the rich fool.  He had done well in life.  He had made large sums of money and he was making plans to increase his wealth.  He had treated his body to every pleasure that money could buy.  But he had neglected his soul and had failed to make preparation to meet God.  The prophet Amos cried out, “Prepare to meet your God”  (Amos 4:2).

One night God appeared to him.  It was the final call that comes to all men.  God said, “This night – there was no postponement – your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?” (Luke 12:30).

And that time will come for us all.  We do not know when or how.  What will matter at that moment will be whether our souls are saved or not.

Jesus is inviting you to come to Him.  Come to Me…and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).  Today we encourage you to receive Christ as your Lord and Savior.
